How to make a lag free Counter Strike 1.6 Server

First of all to make a good 10 - 12 slot server, 512 kbps is recommended upload speed.

Even if you have 256 kbps upload speed, you can manage to create 8 slot lag free server. (if you increse the slots to 10, the players will be seen framing to manage the lag, server will send less updates per second)

Step 1

Create a shortcut of hlds.exe and add to the target field
-console -game cstrike -pingboost 3 +sys_ticrate 1000 +heapsize 262144 +maxplayers 12 +map de_nuke +port 27016
Click apply and OK.

heapsize value depends on your total Physical RAM available for

128MB of RAM- 16384
256MB of RAM- 65536
512MB of RAM- 262144
1GB of RAM- 524288
2GB of RAM- 1048576

Step 2

In server.cfg add these lines (must have)

sv_logbans 0

now add the following lines according to your upload speed

Step 3

Now add sv_maxrate, sv_minrate, sv_maxupdaterate, sv_minupdaterate commands.
These 4 are the most essential commands for running counter strike 1.6 server with as low lag as possible (can be also absolutely lagless), but these 4 commands depends on 2 factors, firstly, your upload speed, and the second one is the number of slots you want to make a server.

Well, there is a good formula for this, but I enter these values by guessing only. The calculations may lead to very laggy server also (if you have less bandwidths)

sv_minrate - This should be kept 0 always.
sv_minrate 0

sv_maxrate - For 256 kbps and 10 slots, sv_maxrate 3100 is a good option.
but as a general rule
sv_maxrate = bandwidth X 128 / server size
so for 256 kbps, and 10 slot, sv_maxrate = 256 * 128 / 10 = 3277. so a good guess! :)

sv_maxrate 25000

sv_maxupdaterate - It is the maximum number of updates of server's models(players, guns, c4, etc.) positions per second that server sends to the client. If its less than 12, then the players, guns etc. will be seen framing. genrally, sv_maxupdaterate 13-16 is good for 256 kbps, and 16-30 for 512 kbps is manageable, but it also depends on the number of players.

As a general rule
sv_maxupdaterate = sv_maxrate / 300

but this gives very less result, so as a general rule of thumb,

for 256 kbps
sv_maxupdaterate value should be 13, 14, 15 or 16, you can also try upto 20 (it wont lag!!) ... for 10 slot
as the slots you increase you have to decrease the sv_maxupdaterate value.

sv_minupdaterate should be less than sv_maxupdaterate , generally, for 256 kbps 10 slots, it is set to 12 or 13.

On LAN
sv_minrate 0
sv_maxrate 0
sv_minupdaterate 60
sv_maxupdaterate 101
should be set before creating server.

Step 4

No other bandwidth rate settings must reside in cfg's other than server.cfg

Step 5

Make the priority of hlds.exe high or realtime.

Step 6

1) Click Start, Select "Run"
2) Type "Gpedit.msc"
3) Expand the "Local Computer Policy" branch
4) Expand the "Administrative Templates" branch
5) Expand the "Network" Branch
6) Highlight the "QoS Packet Scheduler" in the left window
7) In the right window, double click the "limit reservable bandwidth" setting
8) On the settings tab, check the "enabled" item
9) Where it says "Bandwidth limit %" change it to read 0

Step 7

Close unnecessary bandwidth and CPU hogging processes.

Step 8

Download and install hlbooster metamod plugin (you should have metamod installed to make this plugin work).

Step 9

Keep amx and other plugins off.

Step 10

Turn off windows automatic updates.

Step 11

Turn off Antivirus auto updates, update them at a scheduled time (automatically).

Removing mouse acceleration makes your aim more accurated.


So here we start:1)Uncheck "Enhance Pointer Precision" in your mouse options (Start->Control Panel->Mouse->Pointer Options) 


2)Install the CPL mouse-fix (google it) by extracting it from the zip file and double clicking on it. When it asks if you wish to add this information to the registry, choose (Yes).


3)Restart your Computer 


4)Add these three commands as I have them typed here with no quotation marks in the shortcut of CounterStrike 1.6 as shown in the picture.

"-noforcemaccel -noforcemspd" 

Allright so here we start:


1) Open Console(~) in-game.

2) Type: bind "The button you want for example: +" (weapon) ex: m4a1;primammo;(pistol) ex: deagle;secammo"

It should be like this : bind "+" "m4a1;primammo;deagle;secammo"

Here are the equipments:

Kevlar = vest
Kevlar and helmet = vesthelm
Flashbang = flash
HE/Hand grenade = hegren
Smoke grenade = sgren
Shield = shieldDefusal kit = defuser

Now you need to know how to unbind them.

1) Open Console (~) in-game

Example: unbind + (unbinds all the bindings on the + button)

To Defuse the bomb more faster, you will need to equip grenade while defusing it.

Windows Vista & 7 64-bit


Windows by default has the usb ports working at 125Hz of 1000Hz that USB is capable of, giving 8ms response times. You can change the frequency to 250Hz(4ms), 500Hz(2ms) and 1000Hz(1ms) to get better response times. These files will increase your USB polling frequency from the Windows Vista default of 125hz to 500hz or 1000hz making your mouse much more responsive in gaming.

1. What you need: HIDUSBF.zip - dimr.exe (Direct Input Mouse Rate)

2. Extract HIDUSBF.zip & dimr.exe into a folder

3. Right click on "HIDUSBF.INF" find install


4. Open HIDUSBF folder and click on "Setup.exe"

5. Find your mouse click on it (it should be highlighted has blue) and at the bottom of the window check "Filter On Device" and select your Rate





6. Click Install Service and Restart. Open up dimr.exe, if it's still runs default 125hz reboot your windows Vista or 7 64-bit operating system again.



Some Mouse wont go up more than 300Hz.

How to Solve Steam connection lost Error


Everyone have problems with this message after entering and play a game
especially after steam Counter-Strike. I encountered this problem myself recently, I tried to look for its solution at the support and assistance of the Steam Powered of the Counter-Strike but in vain, finally I understood that an update is made to block the valve always setmaster and certain `s ip.



Please follow the steps carefully.
1) Turn off the steam application.
2) Enter in "Control Panel" and select "Security Center" so you get the "Windows Security Center.
3) Enter the "Automatic Updates" and select "Turn off Automatic Updates" then click "Apply" then "OK".
4) Enter the "Windows Firewall" where the check box "On (recommended) 'and then' make sure that box is unchecked and" Do not Allow Exceptions "then click" Apply "then "OK".
5) Download "MasterServers.vdf" and copy it in the folder "config" in "C:\Program Files\Steam\config" and replace it.

If you're having trouble with people connecting to your server...1. You either are behind a router which doesn't have the nessecary ports open.
2. You're behind a firewall, which once again doesn't have the nessecary ports open.
3. In the server config or in the console, you need to set sv_lan 0.

1. Opening ports in your router.

Heres how to open the ports on your router to maximize packet input and output in CS 1.6 etc.
FIRST!! make sure you know an admin login for your router, the default login for admin should be:
Username: admin Password: admin
ALSO!!! You will need to know your Interal IP. in order to get this you must:
a) Press start and then press "Run" b) Type "cmd" into the little box that appears c) When and if the black box comes up type in there "ipconfig/all" d) Lots of crap should come up if entered correctly e) Sift through the crap and find your "IP Address" this will be your internal one.


Step 1) Type your router's IP into the address bar of your web browser (default is 192.168.1.1) if not then you can find out for yourself by:


a) Pressing start and then pressing "Run" b) Typing "cmd" into the little box that comes up c) When and if the black box comes up type in there "ipconfig/all" d) Lots of crap should come up if entered correctly e) Scroll down and stare at the crap you should find a line called "Default Gateway" and then an ip is your routers IP, or at least should be.


Step 2) Now that you have entered the IP in and hit the "ENTER" key a login box should appear; you must now login with your login details.


Step 3) Now you should have access to the router screen, depending on the router there should be a menu somewhere, that allows you to port forward, usually under advanced settings, Virtual Servers or NAT.


If you have any poblems with this step simply go to:



2. Sv_lan 1
In rare cases, your server might have sv_lan set to 1. This is blocking all outside connections from being made to your server, and only allowing people inside the Local Access Network to connect. Now, to stop this, simply go into console and type sv_lan 0. Now for those who grow tired of doing this time after time. Specially on non-24/7 standalone servers. Their's an easy to make sure that your server, sets sv_lan 0, as its deafult settings. Locate your CS directory, in most cases is:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\username\Counter-Strike\cstrike\
There should be a file called server.cfg. Open this using Word, or any other simple typing applications. Now near the bottom there should be a line called '\\ Load Ban Files'. Above this simply add 'sv_lan 0'.
